Short Reviews of RiffTrax Shorts: Why Doesn't Cathy Eat Breakfast? / Petaluma Chicken

It's Short Reviews of RiffTrax Shorts, our new series where the title is almost as long as the actual reviews!  We are going to take a look at a RiffTrax Short every day this year, until we run out of shorts.  That will get us through the majority of the year, so strap in for madness!

(Released March 6, 2008)

This RiffTrax Short is special for multiple reasons—the most obvious being the fact that this is actually two shorts together.

The first part of this is Why Doesn't Cathy Eat Breakfast? In this short we watch Cathy, a girl of around twelve getting ready for her day. A narrator starts asking her questions about why she doesn't eat breakfast, and he is apparently way off base with all of his assumptions. We get zero clues as to why she doesn't eat breakfast, and then the short ends.

Then the drugs kick in and Petaluma Chicken starts up.  This is one of the weirdest shorts they have done.  Young women from around the county gather to make a big omelette.  How do they accomplish this task?  Part of it involves calisthenics in the comically oversized frying pan that they then use to cook the olmette in.  I'm sure this awakened a fetish in at least one person who watched it.

Even if the riffing in this combo platter wasn't hilarious it would still be an essential purchase simply for how bizarre it turned out to be. That being said, the riffing in both halves of this short is marvelous. The confusion that they show at the end of the first half leads into the confusion over the entirety of the second half perfectly.

Why Doesn't Cathy Eat Breakfast? / Petaluma Chicken gets five out of five, and is a PB&A Essential.
