The Glow Necklace Incident of 1984

I can't believe I never shared this story.  This story is one of my oldest memories, and it actually explains a lot about me.

It was the summer of 1984.  I was six years old and living with my mother.  On this particular weekend, the circus was in town, and she decided she would take me.

After meeting the clowns and riding the elephant, it was time for the show to start.  I don't remember much about the show itself, other than the fact that trapeze "artists" that night sucked.

At some point in the evening, my mother bought me a glow necklace.


It was pretty much just like that one.  There was one tiny difference, and that will come in to play here presently.

A lot of you will have heard that if you stick a glow necklace in the freezer overnight, it will supposedly last longer.  I don't know about the validity behind that line of thinking, but I do know it was something my mother believed.

When we got home from the circus, into the freezer the glow necklace went.  And I went to bed.

At around 2:30 a.m., I woke up to go to the bathroom.  Before heading back to bed, I decided I was going to sneak a popsicle.  I pushed one of the dining room chairs over to the refrigerator, and opened the freezer.  The glow necklace caught my eye, the almost haunting green glow illuminating the inside.  Something overtook me.  I took out the glow necklace and thought, I wonder how this tastes?

This is where that tiny difference I mentioned comes into play.  At the bottom the the glow necklace in the picture, you will see a little end piece that holds it into a circle.  The piece goes over both ends, which are sealed off.  Back thirty years ago, this piece was attached to one end.  As I found out that night, if you pull hard enough, you can pop it right open.

Yes, I popped open the glow necklace, and I drank it.

After that, I started crying.  It didn't taste good, my tummy hurt, and now I didn't have my glow necklace anymore.  I was loud enough that my mother woke up.  She came out to see what was wrong, and I somehow managed to tell her through the tears and that weird breathing thing you did as a kid when you were crying.

She rushed me to the hospital to get my stomach pumped, and I never had the urge to drink a glow necklace again.

As for drinking other things that taste bad, well...

Bottom Shelf Mixology: Whiskey Split

Welcome to Bottom Shelf Mixology!  Our staff of Mixologists have racked their brains (and livers) to come up with special "bottom shelf" versions of popular drinks, and some original creations that range from "oh, that might be interesting" to "that sounds absolutely disgusting".  


Today is National Banana Split Day, and it is also National Whiskey Sour Day.  We decided that we were going to somehow combine the two into a Bottom Shelf Mixology recipe, and I think we have come up with one of our greatest drinks ever!

Whiskey Split
  • 1.5 oz R&R Whiskey
  • .5 oz Amaretto
  • 1.5 oz 99 Bananas Schnapps
  • 1 tsp Store Brand Chocolate Flavored Syrup
  • 1 tsp Store Brand Strawberry Flavored Syrup
  • Whipped Dessert Topping (in spray can)
  • 1 Wild Cherry Luden's Throat Drop
  • Ice
In a shaker, combine the whiskey, amaretto, and banana schnapps.  Mix well, and poor into a small glass.

Add in the chocolate and strawberry flavored syrup, and stir gently.

Top the drink with a healthy amount of whipped dessert topping, and place the cherry (throat drop) on top.  You might want to drizzle a bit more syrup on top as well.

If you are sick of people always wanting to have some of your banana split, this drink is sure to put an end to that.

Three Years of Bad Drinks, Good Snacks, Holiday Stuff, and RiffTrax!


Wow, I can't believe I've already been at this for three years!  When I signed up on Blogger, Peanut Butter & Awesome was going to be a little side blog for me.  At the time, Digital Something was still alive, and I was posting all of my news stories there.  When we decided to close DS, I actually started using PB&A.

Things have grown larger than I ever expected, and it's all thanks to you!  We might not get amazing page view numbers, but it is still more than I ever expected.  I want to thank all of you from the sub-cockle area of my heart.

Over the last three years, we have written about a wide variety of subjects.  From video game reviews to Pop-Tarts, RiffTrax and other movies, to cheap whiskey and gross drink recipes, we aren't adverse to writing about anything.

To look back over the last three years, I have collected some of our most popular posts.  Before we get to those, however, let's see what some other people had to say about the last three years!

Bottom Shelf Mixology: Jet Fuel

Welcome to Bottom Shelf Mixology!  Our staff of Mixologists have racked their brains (and livers) to come up with special "bottom shelf" versions of popular drinks, and some original creations that range from "oh, that might be interesting" to "that sounds absolutely disgusting".  


Jet Fuel

  • 1.5 oz Fleischmann's Whiskey
  • 1 Tsp Sriracha
  • 1 Tsp Honey

Start by measuring out your sriracha, then pouring it into a glass.  Use the same spoon, with the remnants of sriracha on it, to measure the honey.  This way, the honey will not stick to the measuring spoon.  Stir well, and then add the whiskey.

This drink is great if you need a quick (albeit fiery) cleanse.

WARNING: This drink may melt steel beams!

Bottom Shelf Mixology: Holy S'Mole

Holy S'Mole

  • 2 oz Mole Sauce (Store Bought)
  • 2 oz El Matador Tequila
  • 1 Tsp. Marshmallow Topping
  • Gluten Free Graham Cracker, Crushed

Start by mixing the mole and tequila in a shaker.  After you pour this into a glass, add the teaspoon of marshmallow topping.

Top the drink with the crushed graham cracker.

This is a great drink to celebrate National S'mores Day, or any time you want to satisfy your sweet tooth with authentic Mexican flair!
