The Santa Clause
(Walt Disney Pictures, 1994)
Tonight's movie, The Santa Clause, has fast become one that we watch a few times every holiday season in our family. There are a total of three movies in this series, but the other two are not quite as good as this first one. Regardless, let's focus on the movie at hand. So, let's talk about what happens when the Tool Man becomes Santa.
For those who may not have seen this movie before, it stars Tim Allen as single father Scott Calvin. On Christmas Eve, Scott gets his son Charlie. His ex-wife tells him that they don't want their son to believe in Santa because it will just confuse him. In the middle of the night, Charlie hears some noises on the roof. He goes and wakes up Scott, who thinks it is a prowler. He goes outside and scares Santa, who falls off the roof and dies. When he dies, he pulls an Obi-Wan and vanishes, leaving his suit behind. Scott puts the suit on and delivers the rest of the presents at the behest of Charlie. And because he put the suit on, the magic of Santa was transferred to him.
This leads to all sorts of wacky scenarios, like Scott getting uncontrollably fatter, facial hair that grows ridiculously fast, and the hilariousness of him losing any visitation rights with his son. So, not only does this movie casually give you the on screen death of Santa, but we also get to see a man get his parental rights stripped from him. Nice.
Now, don't get me wrong, this movie is actually very funny. I does beg the question, however, as to what you would do if you killed Santa and had to take over? Would you be able to handle the pressure? Would you be able to leave everything behind of your current life to go live in the icy cold North Pole with a bunch of kids with pointy ears?
Tonight's song selection is another wonderful oddity: Robot Jesus
