HMM '12 Day 23: Deep Rising

It's October! That means two very important things: Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts are here, and Halloween is near! My favorite thing to do in October to prepare myself for Halloween is to, of course, watch movies that I feel best exemplify the season. Now, this doesn't just mean extreme gore fests (of course, I do love me some gore), but I like to include movies that have that Halloween feel. Anyway, let's get to Day 23 of Halloween Movie Madness 2012!

Deep Rising
(Hollywood Pictures, 1998)

Today's film is Deep Rising. Have you ever seen it?  If you have not, and you like movie with giant sea creatures, half-digested people, and Famke Janssen, I strongly suggest this movie to you. Of course, this is one of those movies that I have a blast watching, but critics hated.  In fact, its one of Ebert's "most hated films".  I think that makes me like it even more.

Deep Rising starts with an explanation about a certain part of the ocean where ships vanish and nobody knows why. Then you get some dramatic POV footage of something swimming. From there, we go to a small boat speeding through the ocean, loaded with a crew of three taking a group of shady characters to an unknown location. From here we jump to a cruise ship on it's maiden voyage, and it's filled with a bunch or rich people and Famke Janssen. We cut back to the other boat and we get our first look at the shady characters: a man puking into a bucket, Midnite from Constantine, Sagat from Street Fighter, and a few other mercenaries.  Gee, I wonder where they are headed?

Right before these guys reach the cruise ship, its computer is disabled by an inside man. Then, all hell breaks loose and people start getting killed. In one of the best scenes in the movie, a woman gets pulled down a toilet.

In fact, almost everyone there dies aside from the few who are needed to move the plot along... I mean, the few who are lucky. Yeah. I won't go past that because I don't want to spoil too much for anyone who hasn't seen this movie (which will be most of you who read this).

This movie has gore-a-plenty, and the effects are very well done, so you don't have to worry about being left high and dry in that department.

As I stated before, if you like B-movies, make sure to check this one out! And don't worry, this may be a B-movie with an A-movie budget and effects, but it still knows that it is a B-movie at the core and it doesn't try to be anything beyond that.

This movie also makes great use of The Girl from Ipanema.

And because I'm feeling a bit lazy, you can count that as your song of the day.
